Leadership refers to how an individual uses power to lead others members of the organization. Research has shown that they are various types of leadership approaches and the type of approach to be used depending on the kind of team members, the function of the leader as well as the prevailing situation in the organization (DuBois et al, 2015). This essay discusses the leadership approach I will be using for a group of 20 employees with specialties in accounting, tax and commercial law and the initiative I will put in place to develop a strong team culture among this new division I will be heading. The leadership approach I am going to use for this group is democratic leadership. This is because unlike autocratic leadership style, the democratic approach is centered on the subordinates making contributions to the decisions made. The team is comprised of people with various knowledge namely in accounting, tax and the commercial law, therefore, bringing them together will result in coming up with great decisions. This type of leadership is effective since it allows communication both upwards and downwards and this will promote competence, fairness and creativity among the team members. The initiative I would put in place to promote strong team culture is by helping every employee understand how they contribute and also make communication a priority. I would bring them together and make them understand everyone is equally important since everyone is needed to achieve the collective goals of the organization. To enhance communication among the members, I would initialize regular periodic meetings and send the team members frequent updates regarding the team performance and objectives. Before any decision is made, I would ensure each member has given his/her views before settling on the appropriate decision.
